There is also a temporal element in Daniel’s understanding of kingdom. Human kingdoms will come to an end, to be displaced by the everlasting kingdom that God will establish: “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall its sovereignty be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand for ever” (2:44). Every kingdom has been set up by God, including those to be destroyed.
